What???

After watching the video on moral metaphors i went over to the immigration links and watched a you tube video on immigration. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvRQEUZH-4k. It was a very interesting first hand interview of these men who live in the streets and work doing whatever they can do because they are immigrants. first off immigration is a very sensitive topic and issue that many people have a very strong opinion about. I have parents who migrated from Mexico to the U.S and I am proud to say that. To me that isn't an embarrassment or anything for me to be ashamed about. My day was a labor union worker and was always there to provide for the family. my mother is a babysitter and does anything she can to provide for the family as well. I was reading the comments on the youtube video that i watched on immigration and one of them was very cruel.

the beaners will never learn... never never never learn... that education is EVERYTHING. get your Shit together back home.. save your pesos and get s SS do things the Right way and think for yourself and not your Pinche fucking family that dosent take care of themselfs...

That is the comment that the person left. and i would like to respond to that. i cannot get it through my head that the word beaner is a necessary word to be used to describe a mexican person, just like a i will never understand niger or even red neck.Those are the words that are used to frame people. Society has made us cruel and rascist whether we know it or not. Yes education IS everything. but Education is also an opportunity and sometimes the opportunity isn't given to those in other countries which is why the united states is the greatest country because we have th opportunities. unfortunately a lot of the people who actually live in the united states and have the opportunity do not take the opportunity and just rub it off like it means nothing. people do not realize how lucky we are to live in this country. My father was a teacher before he came to the united states. He was a social studies teacher and was very successful. And even though he had the greatest education in Mexico it still didn't compare to something as great even being a teacher in the u.s it is just not the same thing, so my parents got married and decided to come to the US. and granted i and very fortunate for that because although my parents were immigrants i am not and i was born here. Slowly but surely my father was able to save enough to have his own home and many luxuries that other do not have the privilege to have. ad although the luxuries are not the important part of this story it is still a plus. the point is people shouldn't sit here and judge everyone based on their race and ignorant thoughts. So why illegals? well yeah they crossed the border and yes they swam the river intact my mother was 8 months pregnant with my brother when she swam across the river. she arrived in california and had contractions, went to the hospital and wasn't helped because of her race... what is her race?? HUMAN!!!! so she ended up giving birth in the hospital bathroom. but you know what that bathroom baby is now? He is a very successful executive who works for the chicago fire team and has a brand new car. How did he get there? EDUCATION. and how was that opportunity given to him? the result of my parents passing the border. so don't say that the family is "lazy". How could you assume that the family doesn't care about themselves? How could you? My father suffered and accident in 2007 that left him incapable of being the same laborer he used to be. what does he do now? nothing because he can't. his body is too frail now due to all of his injuries. In 2009 he became a citizen of the united states he studied and studied and did what he could and he passed and it was the happiest day of his life. recently we were in trial trying to get compensation for his injuries... the result? nothing... the jury found my dad to be unworthy of any compensation because he was a wetback and he shouldn't have been here to take the job that he couldn't do and he suffered and accident because he wasn't supposed to be there in the first place. I could go on and on about how unfair stereotypes are but it isn't going to change anything because the frames are always going to be there, and an immigrant or an illegal is always going to be the evil in this nations eyes...

THE STRICT FATHER MODEL:
the way that i see Lakoff's explanation about this is that the father is the absolute head of the household. He is the king, the ruler, the master. Basically whatever he says goes. kind of reminds me of a macho man view. But Lakoff wasn't only saying that the father is the "boss". He educates us about some very important points that explain a lot about the power that the father has in this type of household. The respects the husband and follows what he says and follows his ideas and plans. The father is be the protector of all evil as well. The father needs to protect the children from all of the evil temptations in the world. The children don't get to experience life n their own way or in their own eyes because the father tells them whats right from wrong. The strict father also shows no love no emotion... which may seem very sad.
THE NURTURANT PARENT:
this family is basically quite the opposite of the one i mentioned above. Love and affection is prime in this type of household. The parent is the supporter and the guide of the child. The child is basically the baby their entire lives because the parent will do anything for the child. To be happy is the very very ultimate goal motto of this household. Children are taught to care for themselves as well to protect themselves to care for their own well being. and most importantly to care for others. Parents in this household can be described as the childs friend as oppose to the childs boss like the above household.

Now which household did i grow up in? i think that i grew up (still am here) in a very different yet similar household. i can see my household as being somewhere in between both. For example my father he is somewhat of a macho man figure which also has a lot to do with the fact that he is mexican with some very old style culture ideals. My mother is a very nurturing person yet she can also be a very strict figure of a mother. I guess I can say that this household of mine can be very confusing due to the fact  that one day they will be super nurturing and the next they can be very strict. I WISH THEY WOULD MAKE UP THIER MINDS!!!

Obama wanted change...

For this assignment I chose Fox news as my resource. It didnt take long for me to find an article that would catch my eye. I noticed one that was titled "republicans accuse Obama of waging class warfare with millionare tax plan". The tittle alone gave me an idea of what the article was going to be about. my thoughts about the whole job reform situation is simple, i think that it is fair for millionares to get higher taxes. It will help the economy. Although some may disagree and have very great reasons why, it doesnt change my opinion though. In this article they tried to frame Obama and being anxious and basically not knowing what he is doing. Obama i the president and one can assume that he does have an idea of what he is doing but people can totally make it their own story by the power of their thoughts and opinions, Fox news seems to be totally against Obama and that alone frames this article in a negative way towards Obama. The reason why this article makes sense for those who it is directed to is because it is declaring how wrong and bad it is. If i was a millinaire i wouldnt want to be taxed higehr simply because i make more money but i guess since i am not it doesnt affect me and i really dont feel like its a bad idea. So it makes perfect sense for a rich person with a high income to be angered and upset about the change and tax increase. because just like that it could happen to us the middle class people where we get our tax increases as well. it would be upsetting because it would minimize our income increadibly. Whe the chaneg will not affect you it doesnt feel so personal and we tend to not really complain about it as much. Like if my car broke down i would be terribly upset which so happens that my car did break down this weekend and that led to a terrible weekend. I told my friend about it and she felt upset for me but the feeling went away almost instantly. why? well it didnt affect her thats why. and just like that the framing issue becomes less personal to those who are not affected.

Obamas job recovery

The frame that the articles in our group were mainly about was obama and his plan for the job recovery. all of the articles showed the same subject in very different ways. it wasnt hard to identify the similarities between all of the articles that we were reading simply because the tittles themselves they were just so obvious and catchy. for example on one of the articles the tittle was somewhere along the lines of "obama wants to play us for fools". that title was actually a quote by sara palin who was interviewed by fox news on obamas plan. this title is obviously showing a negative feeling towards obama. the people who read this article will automatically have in mind the negative feeling towards the article. its like when someone tells you a story and before they even begin to tell the story they begin with a negative comment or feeling. like "i really hate him" or something like that. when you are about to hear the story you have already been influenced by the immediate reaction of the speaker. which brings us into the topic of power. power is something that a journalist has over the people. writers in general have power. it is a very different power than the usual power that we think of like light or muscle power. the power that a journalist or writer holds is that they defiantly have the ability to shape the readers mind. when a tragic situation happens the news and media will portray the situation as a different situation than a different news station. and like someone mentioned in class celebrity's get ratted on everyday and different reporters based on their emotional connect will base his or her opinion on it and write the story based on their emotions. Sara Palin obviously isn't happy with Obama being the president as it is. and publishing a comment that she said and making that the tittle is going to affect the viewers thoughts and opinions as well and maybe people will say " she is right i am no fool." the second article that i want to talk about was one that was very simple yet big. twelve words to describe obamas plan. all of the words that were used were negative adjectives describing his plan. and the description of some even read that he had no plan at all and that it was nothing but just talk. again the power of these words will really reflect on the opinion that the writer has and will affect the opinion that the reader will take. some people do not even know about obama and his plan and to be compeltely honest i didnt know about it either until i began to hear about it in the news. one news channel said this is great while the other one said what is he thinking. and when it all comes down to it all you really have to think about is what are you thinking... sometimes it may be hard to write a story as ournalist and not use your emotions or your own opinions. because thats what writing is about. its about expressing. i wouldnt tell ajournalist to change their way of writing but instead i would suggest that the reader has a strong mind and base their opinions on what they think and connect different sourcs rather than just simply taking the opinion of others. its like when you are in a relationship (most people) they are with someone because THEY think that the person is great not because someone else said it. So why cant writing and reading be the same way?

Both of the links for the video that the professor posted were not working for me, but i had heard about this interview before. mis interpretations can be scary especially when it comes to something that will be nationally heard and judged on. even though i couldn't watch the interview reading the script gave me an idea of what the interview was about. the whole concept of framing plays a big role in this incident like in the frame work article "don't think of an elephant" you will automatically think of one maybe even because we hear the word. in this incident just by hearing the word gun any person would probably automatically think of violence.  unfortunately we have been taught that guns are bad. and we live in a very violent world throughout the city we are surrounded by many terrible neighborhoods where people use the guns that are meant for protection to hurt others. gang violence is affecting us everyday and our youngsters are growing up in this violence. although guns are used for our protection people tend to categorize guns as bad. when the young boy said he wanted a gun he was saying it to show that he wanted the gun to protect people not to be violent. but seeing where the interview took place and who the young boy was as far as race. i think that race and prejudice had a lot to do with this interview in general and the whole idea that the interviewer was trying to portray to the audience. stereotypes such as black folks use guns to kill or something similar are surrounding our everyday lives and when we hear a child say i want a gun of course the first reaction is going to be a gasp. but that was not the case here the child was really saying he wanted to PROTECT. protection is something that this has probably not come across during his life in the neighborhood where he has been raised. the truth behind the interview protects the truth of what the for really meant and deletes the stereotype because we see what the true story was and what he actually meant as oppose to what would make a good story. if i was trying to write my own version of this story i would be sure to emphasize the far that the child wants to actually grow up. that the child actually wants a future and not only a future but a good future because he wants to have a career. how many children today actually really look forward to following the footsteps of gang members and drug abusers. the tittle of my article would be "4 year old boy wants to grow to PROTECT as oppose to what the tittle is. we don't hear stories like these often. the media uses framing works most of the time to create their own versions of stories that will sell instead of the truth. the word protect would be a very important word that i would use to enforce the positiveness that it portrays.

The way that I see work is not the same in every instance, for example homework. i know that homework is important because it will determine a grade that i am striving for. a grade that i need to put forth effort because i am paying a very high amount of tuition and therefore i need to make my money worth, i also look at homework as a form of personality. i want my teachers to see that i have motivation and that i am hard worker. obviously i am not talking about labor work or anything like that i am just talking about school work and homework. i don't want the teacher to think that i am lazy i also don't want to let myself down by not doing good school work or homework, not to mention my parents. I've always been a good student growing up but now that i am in a university in a different environment things get a little rough because not only do i have to worry about school work or homework i also have to worry about work work. now work work is a different situation. i also put in a lot of effort into my job because i would like to be looked at as a potential associate that deserves a promotion. i defiantly do not want to be stuck at minimum wage for the rest of my life. i work at customer service so i have to be presentable and also be respectful not only to my managers and co-workers but also with the people who come into the store because i do not want to be known as the jerk clerk. also work can mean the work you put into a relationship. obviously you want the other person that you care about to know how much you care about them so you are going to put work int the relationship whether it be mother daughter, brother sister, father daughter, or even girlfriend and boyfriend. you want to be known as a nice genuine person who works hard at every single thing that you do in life. well i do at least. part of the reason why i feel this way is because of the way that i was raised, my parents never taught me to give up nor did they ever show me that as an example. i was always pushed to try and try and do my best and that is what i do. although sometimes laziness conquers your life at moments. but all i do is look back at how important work is for me and then it all changes back to trying my best. when i know i am doing bad in school i think about what my parents are going to think about me and i quickly change my pace of work. sometimes at work work i get influenced by the lazy workers there and the ones who only like to be jerks and talk about the customers until i quickly realize that i am not that person who talks about others or who doesn't work hard.   when i hear the word work i instantly think of something dissatisfying something that most people do not like to do. because work seems like a negative word. it almost seems as though work is another word for depression for most people. when they say the word work their attitudes instantly escalate downward. thats what i think when the word work is spoken. just like when the wry elephant is said i think of a trunk when work is said i think of bad. i do believe that people in other countries can think of work as the best thing that they have because in so many places work is not available to people work is a form of survival and a lot of people can be extremely joyful that they have work for them. i think that in the united states we have become lazy and used to the "good life" that we forget what it is like to struggle for what we believe to struggle for what will make us happy. people give up too easily and i am a victim of that as well. if i could just picture myself living in a world where i do not have the luxury of life that i do then maybe my whole view of work would be totally turned at 360 degrees.
